In 1571 an episode of war, in itself not fundamental, was destined to symbolise the centuries-long clash with the Turks. A century later, it was the reaction to the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683 that renewed the image of Lepanto. The victorious conclusion of that event in the Tyrolean context was attributed to the Madonna and Child venerated in Passau. From then on, that image was called ‘Maria Hilf’, Mary Helping or Our Lady of Help.
